Lettuce prefers cool conditions and dislikes high temperatures. Its seeds begin to germinate above 4°C, with an optimum germination temperature of 15-20°C, and are inhibited by high temperatures above 30°C. Therefore, except in the high-temperature season, before sowing lettuce seeds, generally no treatment is needed.

In July and August, however, because the temperature is too high, germination treatment is generally required. The methods for germinating lettuce are as follows:
         1. First soak the seeds for 2 hours, then wrap them in moist gauze, hang them in a water well or place them in a cave or in a refrigerator at 5-10°C for 3-4 days for low-temperature germination. Once most of the seeds have germinated, sow them.

         2. Treat the seeds with plant hormones, such as soaking the seeds in a 100 microliters/liter (ppm) kinetin solution for 3 minutes, or soaking them in a 5 microliters/liter (ppm) gibberellin solution for 6-7 hours. The germination effect is good.
