The main damage caused by the spinach leafminer is that the larvae of the spinach leafminer feed on the leaf mesophyll inside the leaves and form relatively wide tunnels. Mild damage affects quality and causes loss of market value; severe damage can destroy the entire field, causing great losses.

The spinach leafminer mostly hatches in the evening. The newly hatched larvae look for leaves without tunnels to bore into. When conditions are suitable, they can bore into the leaf mesophyll in 1 day, but when they cannot find a suitable host, they can also feed on manure or humus and complete development. After the larvae mature, some pupate in the leaf mesophyll, and some enter the soil to pupate. However, the larvae of the overwintering generation all enter the soil to pupate, and the pupal stage lasts 6 months.

Control methods for the spinach leafminer:
        1. Harvest early. For root-stubble overwintering spinach, all of it must be harvested before Grain Rain to reduce egg laying by overwintering-generation adults.

        2. Deeply plow the land. After harvest, deeply plow the land in time. This not only benefits plant growth but also destroys some of the pupae that have entered the soil to pupate, reducing the source of insects in the field.

        3. Apply sufficient base fertilizer. For base fertilizer, apply fully decomposed organic fertilizer, especially barnyard manure, to avoid bringing the source of insects into the field.

        4. Apply pesticide control during the key period from the peak egg-laying stage of the leafminer to the early hatching stage before the larvae have bored into the leaves; otherwise, spraying will be less effective. You can spray 2.5% deltamethrin emulsifiable concentrate at 2000 times dilution, or 20% fenvalerate emulsifiable concentrate at 3000 times dilution, or 40% cypermethrin-malathion emulsifiable concentrate at 3000 times dilution, or 10% deltamethrin-malathion emulsifiable concentrate at 1500-2000 times dilution, or 90% trichlorfon crystal at 1000 times dilution for control.
