After cotton plants begin to flower, it is both a period of rapid growth of vegetative organs such as stems, branches and leaves, and a critical period when large numbers of flowers open and bolls form to produce yield. During this period, cotton plants accumulate the most dry matter, their demand for nutrients increases greatly, large amounts of nutrients in the leaves are consumed, and nutrients urgently need to be replenished. Yet at this time the content of readily available nitrogen in the soil drops sharply, so flower and boll fertilizer must be applied heavily to make up for the shortage of soil nutrients and meet the cotton plants' large demand for nutrients. By applying flower and boll fertilizer heavily and taking advantage of the favorable conditions of high temperatures and ample sunlight during this period, cotton plants can be encouraged to flower and set bolls in a concentrated way, thus creating a good material foundation for achieving early maturity, high yield and good quality in cotton. Flower and boll fertilizer should be based mainly on readily available nitrogen fertilizer so that its effect can be exerted quickly. The topdressing amount is generally 15-20 kg of standard nitrogen fertilizer per mu, accounting for about more than one half of the total topdressing amount. The fertilization method should be deep application in furrows, and in dry weather "use water to promote fertilizer" so as to improve fertilizer efficiency.
