What are the key points to note when planting sweet potatoes in autumn
What should be noted when planting sweet potatoes in autumn? Please give guidance. For autumn sweet potato planting, you can refer to the following methods: Select good varieties - choose early-maturing, high-quality, high-yielding improved varieties such as "Sushu 7", "Sushu 8", "Yusu 303", "Xushu 18", and "Yuzi 263 (purple-fleshed sweet potato)"; select sturdy seedlings with thick stems, dense nodes, moderate maturity, rich sap, free of disease, free of degeneration, and free of adventitious roots, with pointed tips and flat heads; plant different varieties separately.

Select good varieties - choose early-maturing, high-quality, high-yielding improved varieties such as "Sushu 7", "Sushu 8", "Yusu 303", "Xushu 18", and "Yuzi 263 (purple-fleshed sweet potato)"; select sturdy seedlings with thick stems, dense nodes, moderate maturity, rich sap, free of disease, free of degeneration, and free of adventitious roots, with pointed tips and flat heads; plant different varieties separately.
Early planting - early planting can extend the field growing period, increase yield and improve quality. For example, in the eastern Sichuan region, the most suitable planting period for autumn sweet potato is from late July to early August. To ensure maturity, it must not be delayed until after the Beginning of Autumn. It should be noted that many farmer friends are accustomed to waiting for rain before planting after land preparation, and some even plant in late August, wasting the great autumn growing period, which is truly a pity.
Fertilization - in light loam or sandy loam fields, open the main ditch, surrounding ditch, and ridge ditch well, so that the ditch system is unobstructed, the ditch bottom is flat and straight, and the ditch dries after rain stops. Apply 25-30 kg per mu of high-efficiency compound fertilizer with an N-P-K ratio of 15-8-16 evenly by broadcasting, then level the land and form ridges.
Sweet potato planting methods:
High ridges - there are two ridge specifications: one is a ridge bottom width of 1.2 m, ridge height of 40 cm, and ridge surface width of 70 cm, with 3 rows planted per ridge in staggered holes (walking-horse planting), hole spacing of 33 cm, and 5000 plants per mu; the other is a ridge bottom width of 1 m, ridge height of 33 cm, and ridge surface width of 60 cm, with double rows planted per ridge in staggered holes, with hole spacing of 33 cm and 4000 plants per mu, or hole spacing of 30 cm and 4400 plants per mu. Also note that density should correspond to the growth habits of the variety.
Coiled planting - on a sunny afternoon or cloudy day, select pointed sturdy seedlings that have not been aged by drought, with a seedling length of 30-40 cm and 8-10 fully expanded green leaves, preferably with 2-3 buds 5-10 cm long at the base of the seedling.
When planting, first open holes with a small "ash knife" or "ash trowel", then coil the sweet potato seedling into a ring shape and insert it 10-13 cm deep into the soil with 6-7 nodes. The buried part should be flat, and the soil cover should be firm below and loose above, exposing all leaves and the seedling tip. Immediately apply human and livestock manure water thoroughly to stabilize the plant. If the soil is dry, first open the hole and irrigate, then plant after the water is absorbed; if there is high temperature and strong light, use rice straw to cover by day and uncover by night for 2-3 days, or when planting expose only the tip and top three leaves while burying the remaining leaves in the soil, to help ensure full seedling survival. The key points are: pointed long vines, coiled planting and flat insertion, burying leaves to stabilize the plant.
Topdressing to promote sweet potato seedling growth: 7-10 days after planting, cultivate the soil, and per mu apply 20-30 loads of human and livestock manure water mixed with 10-15 kg of ammonium bicarbonate or 5 kg of urea (preferably 7-10 kg of 40% high-efficiency compound fertilizer) to irrigate the holes; at the same time, per mu apply 100-150 kg of plant ash mixed with 25-30 kg of superphosphate between the holes, not inside the holes (if high-efficiency compound fertilizer was used as base fertilizer, only human and livestock manure water is needed to promote seedling growth);
When the vines and leaves close the rows, per mu spray on the leaves 0.5 kg of 21.8% zinc sulfate or 0.8 kg of compound zinc fertilizer mixed with 50 kg of water; in early October, per mu use 100 g of potassium dihydrogen phosphate and 150 g of urea, mixed with 50 kg of water, and spray on the leaves 2-3 times.
