Zhongdi Web has compiled some methods for getting yardlong beans to produce more pods, listed below for fellow gardeners' reference.

Method 1:The planting density of yardlong beans should be reasonable. The best time to transplant yardlong bean seedlings is when the heart leaves have just unfolded.

For reasonable row spacing of yardlong beans, the narrow row is generally 60 cm, the wide row is 80 cm, and the trellis height is 1.8-2 m. The taller the trellis, the greater the row spacing should be. Plant spacing is about 45 cm, generally with two plants per planting spot. If the planting density is too high, it will cause yardlong bean plants to grow excessively and make it difficult for them to set pods.

  2. Temperature factors:
Pay attention to the day-night temperature difference. Yardlong beans have strong heat tolerance but are not tolerant of frost. The suitable growing temperature is 20°C-25°C. During the flowering and pod-setting period of yardlong beans, daytime temperature, nighttime temperature, and the day-night temperature difference should be well controlled. During the flowering period of yardlong beans, the more suitable growing temperature should not exceed 30°C during the day and should not exceed 18°C at night.

Therefore, yardlong bean growers are reminded to manage the time for closing the greenhouse well. The time for closing the greenhouse should be delayed as the temperature rises. During the flowering and pod-setting period of yardlong beans, the standard for closing the greenhouse is when the greenhouse temperature reaches 17°C.

  3. Increase light:
Although yardlong bean varieties grown in greenhouses do not have strict requirements for photoperiod, they have relatively high requirements for light intensity. Especially during the flowering and pod-setting period, insufficient light will cause yardlong bean flowers and pods to drop.

  4. Skillful fertilization and watering:

Throughout the entire growing period of yardlong beans, the most basic practice should be to water three times: after planting, water the first time, and be sure to water thoroughly, otherwise the plants will be uneven; when the vines grow to 0.6 m high, water the second time; the most critical point in yardlong bean production is to water during the pod stage, not the pod-setting stage. During the full flowering period of yardlong beans, it is not suitable to water, so the third watering should be done before the early flowering stage, and combined with watering, spray a flower-promoting and fruit-setting agent, which is more helpful for yardlong bean flowering and pod setting. After pod setting, water lightly once more to promote pod expansion and elongation.

Yardlong beans should not be given excessive nitrogen fertilizer, otherwise it will cause excessive growth of vines and leaves and delay flowering and pod setting. More phosphorus fertilizer should be applied to promote the formation of root nodules and enhance their nitrogen-fixing ability.
