Honeysuckle cultivation can refer to the following planting methods and management techniques:
1. Planting method
Deeply plow the soil to loosen it, apply sufficient farmyard manure, dig round pits with a diameter of 30 cm and a depth of about 25 cm at a plant spacing of 1 m and a row spacing of 1.60 m. In each pit, plant 3 to 6 honeysuckle seedlings in a fan shape spread along the walls, water thoroughly, and firm the soil by treading on it. Use about 4,000 seedlings per mu. In the year of planting, low-growing crops can be planted between the rows. If planted beside roads or on field banks, in front of or behind houses, the density can be appropriately increased.
2. Field management
Loosen the soil and remove weeds. Keep the area around the flower mounds free of weeds. Loosen the soil and mound up soil around the plants in early spring and early winter each year.
Topdressing. In early spring and early winter each year, while loosening the soil and removing weeds, dig ring-shaped trenches around the flower mounds and apply 150 g of compound fertilizer and 5 kg of farmyard manure to each mound.
Shaping and pruning. In winter or early spring, cut off senescent dry branches as well as overly dense and excessively vigorous branches to help nutrients concentrate on growing flowering branches. For old flower mounds that have not been pruned for a long time, after harvesting the flowers, cut off all branches 25 cm above the ground to allow them to regrow tender shoots and form new flowering branches.
Pest and disease control. Honeysuckle is often affected by anthracnose, which can be controlled by drenching with Dexon wettable powder diluted 500 to 1,000 times. For rust, spray with a 200 to 250 times solution of the original powder of fenaminosulf. For aphids, use a 1,000 to 2,000 times solution of 40% dimethoate emulsifiable concentrate for control. Note: Do not use toxic pesticides during the honeysuckle bud stage.
