Causes of difficulty in heading in rice:
When rice has difficulty heading, or shows the neck-enclosed phenomenon, the grains enclosed within the leaf sheath generally become empty or shriveled grains because they cannot emerge in time to pollinate and fertilize, which has a major impact on yield.

There are many causes of this phenomenon. In some cases, the variety itself is more prone to the neck-enclosed phenomenon, and it becomes even more severe under adverse environmental conditions. In other cases, improper pesticide application is the cause; for example, excessive application of agents such as triadimefon before heading can easily lead to the neck-enclosed phenomenon, and application of herbicides such as wipla and puma affects rice growth and can also cause difficulty in heading. Adverse environmental conditions such as excessively low temperatures at the heading stage can also lead to the neck-enclosed phenomenon in rice.

Solutions for difficulty in heading in rice:
When rice shows difficulty in heading at the heading stage, spraying gibberellin can promote heading, allowing the panicles to emerge in time within 2-3 days and to flower and pollinate normally, which can effectively reduce the empty and shriveled grain rate of the grains in the lower part of the panicle.

Generally, 1-2 grams of 920 (gibberellin preparation) per mu is mixed with 50-60 kg of water for spraying. If difficulty in heading occurs in patches in the field, take care to spray only these patches when applying the pesticide, and try not to spray plants that are heading normally, so as to avoid excessive elongation of the last internode of these rice plants. For patch spraying, the amount applied should be determined according to the actual sprayed area to avoid excessive application in local areas.
In addition, combined spraying with Chunquan series foliar fertilizers as well as 0.1% sodium humate, 1.5% potassium chloride, 2% urea solution, etc., can enhance leaf photosynthetic function and increase the seed-setting rate.
