How is Eucommia ulmoides propagated vegetatively? Please describe the methods.
For vegetative propagation of Eucommia ulmoides, the following methods can be used:
1. Root cutting for seedling raising. Dig up root segments from large plants, or use the thicker roots trimmed off when lifting seedlings, cut them into 7 to 10 cm long segments, first make holes in the seedbed with a wooden cone slightly thicker than the root segment, then insert the lower end of the root segment into the hole with the thicker end slightly exposed above the ground, and water once each day before sunrise and in the evening. After 40 to 60 days, new seedlings grow from the callus tissue at the cut surface or from buds on the bark of the root segment.
2. Stump propagation for seedling raising. After a Eucommia ulmoides tree is cut down, the stump will sprout many new shoots. In April of spring, cut several slits with a knife on the shoots right next to the stump, then mound soil over the stump. That same year, many fibrous roots will grow from the slits, and the following year they can be taken off with roots and transplanted.
3. Dormant branch cutting propagation for seedling raising. Select one-year-old sturdy branches free of pests and diseases, cut them in April, then cut them into 15 cm long small segments retaining 3 to 4 lateral buds, place the lower part into a 100 ppm ABT rooting powder solution, soak for 2 hours and take them out, first make holes in the seedbed with a wooden cone, and insert the branches until the upper end is level with the bed surface. Then build a shade frame with seven-tenths shade over the seedbed, spray water once every morning, and roots generally form after 40 to 60 days. Afterwards, strengthen management, and they can be transplanted after one year.
4. Softwood cutting propagation for seedling raising. From June to August, select vigorous shoots of the current year, cut them into small segments with 3 lateral buds, do not remove the leaf at the terminal bud of each small segment, and immediately place them into a 100 ppm ABT rooting powder solution, soak for 1 to 2 hours. If dormant branches are used, use the same method. Insert them into the seedbed with the upper leaves exposed, then build a shade frame with nine-tenths shade over the seedbed, water once each morning and evening for the first month, and after the root system forms, spray less water gradually, but the bed surface must be kept moist. For softwood cuttings, morning is the best time to carry out the work. This method has a high survival rate and fast rooting.
