How do you grow cabbage in autumn? Please explain the methodsFor autumn cultivation, cabbage has a short growing period and grows quickly. It is generally transplanted in mid to late September and can be harvested 60 days after transplanting. Flat-bed cultivation can be used, and later covering for delayed autumn cultivation can extend the harvest until after New Year's Day. For detailed management methods, refer to the following methods:
1. Fertiliser and water management for cabbage:After thinning to a stand, apply 15 kg of urea per mu along with watering. After the seedlings recover, control watering and promptly hoe 2-3 times for light root restriction for about 10 days. When head formation begins, strengthen fertiliser and water management, increase the amount of watering, and apply 10-15 kg of urea per mu along with watering to promote rapid growth. Once the heading stage begins, because the leaf heads grow quickly and need more water, water whenever the soil surface looks dry, generally once every 5-7 days. Stop watering 7 days before harvest to prevent the leaf heads from splitting, which also helps with storage and transport.
2. Later protection for cabbage:From late October to early November, the weather turns cold and is no longer suitable for cabbage growth, so small arch tunnels with plastic film should be used for covering. In the early covering stage, if the weather is good, ventilate fully. Keep the daytime temperature at around 20°C and the nighttime temperature at around 10°C. After that, as the temperature drops, seal the film tightly according to the cabbage's growth condition and try to maintain its growth.
3. Pest and disease control for cabbage:The main diseases of cabbage are black rot and downy mildew. In the early stage of black rot, streptomycin at 100-200 mg/L can be used, sprayed once every 7 days for 2-3 consecutive sprays. In the early stage of downy mildew, use 25% metalaxyl wettable powder at 800 times dilution or 75% chlorothalonil wettable powder at 600 times dilution, once every 7 days for 3-5 consecutive sprays.
The main insect pests of cabbage include imported cabbageworm, aphids, diamondback moth, and tobacco cutworm. For control, you can choose 2.5% lambda-cyhalothrin EC at 5000 times dilution, or 50% phoxim at 500 times dilution, or abamectin at 2000-3000 times dilution, or 2.5% deltamethrin EC at 4000 times dilution for spray control.
4. Harvesting cabbage:Once the leaf heads of early-maturing heading cabbage have formed, they quickly enter the head-filling stage. Harvest promptly once the leaf heads are firm. Generally, a single head weighs 0.5-0.7 kg, with larger ones over 1 kg, and the average yield is around 5000 kg per mu.
