The peanut pod-setting stage refers to the period from when chicken-head-shaped young pods first appear to when plump pods first begin to show, and it is the key period that determines the number of pods.  Zhongdiwang has compiled the management methods for peanuts during the pod-setting stage, listed below for gardeners' reference.

Measure one:Topdressing at the early pod-setting stage. Because the pegs and pod surfaces of peanuts can absorb nutrients from the soil and mainly supply their own needs, at the early pod-setting stage apply 10-15 kg per mu of a compound fertilizer based mainly on phosphorus and calcium by broadcasting it into the peanut plant clusters. This can increase pod yield by 50-100 kg per mu, and the quality can also be improved.

Measure two:Foliar spraying. During the whole growth period, foliar fertilizer can be sprayed on both the front and back of the leaves multiple times, either combined with pesticide spraying or separately. In high-yield fields and acidic soil plots, insufficient calcium content affects peanut yield and quality. Spraying foliar fertilizer rich in complexed amino acid calcium can quickly supplement calcium, magnesium and other elements, increase the number of pods and improve pod quality.

Measure three:Regulating growth. After rain, peanuts grow rapidly and become vigorous. Around 30 days after the first flowering, when the plants have already closed rows or are close to closing rows, spray 1000-1200 times dilution of Zhuangbaoan (or paclobutrazol) 2 times consecutively at intervals of about 15 days, to effectively inhibit stem and branch elongation, prevent lodging, delay leaf drop and promote pod growth and development.

Measure four:Controlling insect pests. After rain, conditions are favorable for the hatching of underground pests such as white grubs and the survival and growth of newly hatched larvae, and also for the reproduction and damage of leaf-eating pests such as cotton bollworm and cotton semilooper. Combined with topdressing, broadcast Sumiedichong pesticide-fertilizer powder or phoxim poisoned soil into the peanut plant clusters. When damage symptoms are found on the heart leaves, spray insecticide.
