How can lotus root be grown for high yield? We hope experienced readers will share their advice

Zhongdi Web has summarized the key points for achieving high yield in lotus root cultivation, listed below for readers' reference.

Point 1: Choose high-quality lotus root planting stock:
You can use a mid-season variety such as the large purple-red lotus root, whose main rhizome has 4-5 nodes.

Point 2: Disinfect the planting rhizomes:
Select main rhizomes with strong buds, 2-3 nodes and a weight of more than 0.5 kg as planting stock, or use large secondary rhizomes as planting stock. After the planting rhizomes are dug up, plant them as early as possible, with a seeding rate of 300-400 kg per mu. Before planting, spray the planting rhizomes with a 800-fold dilution of 70% thiophanate-methyl wettable powder, pile and cover them for 24 hours, and plant once the solution has basically dried.

Point 3: Preparation of the lotus field:
Choose a field with convenient drainage and irrigation, a stable water level and fertile soil for planting. In spring, apply 5000 kg of decomposed organic fertilizer per mu; half a month before planting, while preparing the land, apply 50 kg of special compound fertilizer for lotus fields and 150 kg of quicklime per mu.

Point 4: Choose the right planting time for lotus root:
The suitable planting time for lotus root is in early to mid-April, with a row spacing of 2-2.5 m and a hill spacing of 0.7-1 m, planting 1 main rhizome or 2 secondary rhizomes per hill. After planting, keep a 3-5 cm water layer in the field; after standing leaves appear, gradually deepen the water layer to 20-30 cm; when the rear floating leaves appear, gradually lower the water layer back to 15-20 cm.

Point 5: Apply topdressing to the lotus field at the right time:
For a new lotus field, apply topdressing 2 times. The first time, on May 20-30, apply 50 kg of ammonium bicarbonate, 25 kg of urea, and 50 kg of special compound fertilizer for lotus fields or compound fertilizer per mu; the second time, on June 20-30, apply 40 kg of urea and 50 kg of special compound fertilizer for lotus fields per mu. For a lotus field planted for more than 2 years, apply topdressing once, around May 20, with 50 kg of urea and 50-75 kg of special compound fertilizer for lotus fields per mu.

Point 6: Timely control of diseases and pests in the lotus field:
Pay attention to controlling stiff lotus root and the lotus root-eating leaf beetle. To control stiff lotus root, mainly adopt agricultural measures such as crop rotation, selecting disease-free fields and disease-free planting rhizomes for planting, clearing leftover branches and dead leaves from the field after harvest, and appropriately increasing phosphorus and potassium fertilizer in the mid-to-late period. To control the lotus root-eating leaf beetle, in mid-to-late May, dilute 100-150 ml of 5% fipronil suspension concentrate per mu (100 ml for new lotus fields, 150 ml for old lotus fields) with 1 kg of water, mix with 10 kg of fine soil and spread evenly.
