Zhongdiwang has compiled the harm and control methods of the wheat blossom midge, listed below for netizens' reference.

Harm of the wheat blossom midge:
The wheat blossom midge is a worldwide pest. It belongs to the order Diptera, family Cecidomyiidae. The female adult is 2-2.5 mm long, the male adult is 1.5-2 mm long, and the larva is 2-3 mm long.

The wheat blossom midge causes enormous damage. In affected wheat fields, yields generally drop by 10%-50%, and in severely affected plots by more than 80%, or even total crop failure. Generally, the larvae bore into the wheat grains and suck the sap. Wheat grains damaged by the wheat blossom midge become necrotic, causing the grains to be empty and shriveled, making the grains lose their food value.

The wheat blossom midge tolerates low temperatures but not high temperatures. When the temperature reaches 50°C, the larvae die immediately. It likes moisture and fears dryness. Larvae soaked in water for 20 days can still survive, but when mixed into dry wheat grains, they dry out and die within just over 10 days.

Control methods for the wheat blossom midge:

Method 1: Apply poisoned soil during the wheat jointing and booting stage. This is the key period for controlling the wheat blossom midge. Use 150 ml of 40% isofenphos-methyl or 50% phoxim emulsifiable concentrate, mix with 5 kg of water, spray onto 20 kg of dry soil, mix well to make poisoned soil, spread it on the soil surface, then hoe, mixing the poisoned soil into the topsoil to kill the larvae. Alternatively, use 2 kg of 3% isofenphos-methyl granules or 0.04% chulichong powder or 4.5% jiadi powder or 4% dima powder, mix with 30 kg of fine soil, spread on the surface of the wheat field, then hoe, mixing the poisoned soil into the topsoil. Watering after applying the pesticide also gives better results.

Method 2: Spray pesticide during the wheat heading stage. This mainly controls the adults. Use 50% phoxim emulsifiable concentrate, 40% omethoate emulsifiable concentrate, 80% dichlorvos emulsifiable concentrate, 36% kemanying emulsifiable concentrate at 1000-1500 times dilution, or 2.5% deltamethrin emulsifiable concentrate, 20% fenvalerate emulsifiable concentrate at 4000 times dilution for spraying. You can also use 2 kg of 4% dima powder or 2% carbaryl powder for dusting control.
