        Yardlong beans strengthen the stomach and tonify the kidneys, contain protein that is easy to digest and absorb, and also contain various vitamins and trace elements. The phospholipids they contain can promote insulin secretion, making them an ideal food for people with diabetes. However, during yardlong bean cultivation, flower drop and pod drop can cause large reductions in yield, so Zhongdi Network has compiled the causes of flower drop and pod drop in yardlong beans and the control measures, listed in detail below for growers to reference.

  I. Causes of flower drop and pod drop in yardlong beans:

       Cause 1. Flower drop and pod drop caused by blocked flower bud differentiation. During the seedling-raising period, temperatures often below 10°C may cause abnormal flower bud differentiation and lead to flower drop and pod drop. When temperatures are too high and water and fertilizer are excessive, the seedlings grow leggy and the flower buds cannot obtain sufficient nutrients, so differentiation is blocked and flower drop and pod drop easily occur;
       Cause 2. Drought and water shortage, and insufficient light, can also cause poor flower bud differentiation and lead to flower drop and pod drop;

       Cause 3. During the growing period, when the plant's vegetative growth is excessive, reproductive growth is inhibited. When nutrients are concentrated in the stems and leaves, flower drop and pod drop also easily occur. Especially during the vine-throwing stage, applying fertilizer and watering too early often causes leggy growth and leads to flower drop and pod drop;
       Cause 4. During the growing period, high temperatures, drought, fertilizer deficiency, or excessive nitrogen fertilizer easily cause flower drop and pod drop;

       Cause 5. Flower drop and pod drop caused by continuous low temperatures and overcast days;
       Cause 6. Flower drop and pod drop caused by unsuitable gas concentration, mainly a lack of carbon dioxide in the greenhouse; flower drop and pod drop caused by excessive close planting;

       Cause 7. Flower drop and pod drop caused by delayed harvesting;
       Cause 8. Flower drop and pod drop caused by damage from pests and diseases, such as root rot, anthracnose, angular leaf spot, fusarium wilt, and gray mold. These diseases directly damage the leaves, root and stem vascular tissues, and tender pods, affecting photosynthesis, the transport of substances, and the normal development of tender pods; severe damage from aphids and whiteflies also causes it.

  II. Measures to prevent and control flower drop and pod drop in yardlong beans:

Measure 1. For flower drop and pod drop caused by blocked flower bud differentiation, the solution is to cultivate strong seedlings. During the seedling-raising period, strictly control temperature, humidity, light, and fertilizer to cultivate strong seedlings.

Measure 2. For flower drop and pod drop caused by excessive vegetative growth, the solution is to coordinate reproductive growth and vegetative growth. For example, delay the period of topdressing and watering, and control the application of nitrogen fertilizer. If vigorous plant growth has already been observed, when the internodes are too long, the growth is thin and weak, and there are signs of leggy growth, spray 20 mg/kg chlormequat to inhibit leggy growth.

  Measure 3. For flower drop and pod drop caused by fertilizer deficiency or excess, the solution is to lower the temperature, irrigate at the right time, and increase the application of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers.

  Measure 4. For flower drop and pod drop caused by low temperatures and scant sunlight, foliar spray 1% monopotassium phosphate + 1% glucose + 1% urea (mainly used at the seedling stage).

  Measure 5. For flower drop and pod drop caused by pests and diseases, the solution is to strengthen pest and disease control, spray some plant growth regulators, and strengthen fertilizer and water management to improve the disease resistance of yardlong beans and promote robust growth.
