Why does lotus root only grow leaves and not rhizomes? How should lotus root be fertilized? Experienced gardeners are asked to help explain.The main reason lotus root does not form rhizomes is that balanced fertilization was not achieved: too much nitrogen fertilizer was applied and too little potassium fertilizer. To achieve high quality and high yield in lotus root, you need to "reduce nitrogen, control phosphorus, and increase potassium." Therefore Zhongdiwang has compiled the fertilization methods for lotus root, listed in detail below for readers' reference.
Nutrient requirements of lotus root during the growing period:
The growth and development of lotus root is divided into three stages: the sprouting stage, the vigorous growth stage and the rhizome-forming stage. The sprouting stage runs from plant sprouting to the appearance of standing leaves.
After lotus root produces standing leaves, the rhizome grows new roots and relies mainly on nutrients stored in the rhizome;
The vigorous growth stage of lotus root runs from the standing leaf stage to the beginning of rhizome formation; nutrient demand is high, and this is the key period for topdressing; the rhizome-forming stage runs from rhizome formation to harvest, when rhizomes and lotus seeds develop simultaneously, nutrient uptake decreases, and most of the nutrients in the stems and leaves are transferred to the rhizomes and lotus seeds.
Fertilization methods for lotus root:
First, before planting lotus root, plow the base fertilizer into the field, generally applying 2000 to 3000 kg of decomposed high-quality farmyard manure per mu, plus 40 to 50 kg of general-purpose compound fertilizer.
The first topdressing of lotus root is at the standing leaf fertilizer stage; when 3 to 5 standing leaves have appeared in the field, apply 25 to 30 kg of nitrogen-phosphorus compound fertilizer per mu;
The second topdressing of lotus root is when standing leaves cover the whole field, applying 30 to 35 kg of nitrogen-potassium compound fertilizer per mu.
Precautions for fertilizing lotus root:
For lotus root in shallow-water fields, compound fertilizer or single-element chemical fertilizer can be applied during fertilization. Drain the water before fertilizing; fertilizing in shallow water gives the best effect, and restore the water layer two days after fertilizing.
For lotus root in deep-water fields, it is better to mix compound fertilizer with soil before applying, which can prevent the fertilizer from floating.
