Harm caused by soybean sclerotinia stem rot:
Soybean sclerotinia stem rot mainly infects the stems. It generally begins to develop in late July, with brown lesions first appearing on the stems; later, white cottony mycelium and white granules grow on the lesions, which then turn into black granules (sclerotia). When the stem of an affected plant is cut lengthwise, black cylindrical sclerotia resembling mouse droppings can be seen.
Infected soybean plants often wither and turn white, which is why the disease is also called dead seedling disease or white silk disease. Sclerotinia stem rot of sunflowers and other crops is caused by infection with the same pathogen as soybean sclerotinia stem rot. The disease overwinters as sclerotia mixed in with the seeds and as sclerotia inside the stems, then germinates to produce mycelium that causes infection the following year; the sclerotia can survive in the soil for two years. Soybeans planted after sunflowers, continuous cropping, low-lying land, and dense, lushly growing soybeans suffer severe disease; years with heavy rainfall from late July to August also see severe disease.
Prevention and control methods for soybean sclerotinia stem rot:
Preventive methods:For soybean sclerotinia stem rot, attention should be paid to crop rotation, and seeds should be carefully selected at sowing time to remove sclerotia mixed in with the seeds.
Chemical control methods:
You can spray with 50% Sumilex wettable powder at 1000 times dilution, 40% Junhejing wettable powder at 1000 times dilution, 50% thiophanate-methyl wettable powder, or 50% carbendazim wettable powder at 500 times dilution.
