What should be noted when growing sunflowers? Are there any netizens who have grown them who can help guide?

Zhongdiwang has compiled the issues to note when growing sunflowers, listed below for netizens' reference.

Note1. Scientifically choose the planting site to prevent continuous cropping:
Sunflowers should be planted on plots with flat terrain and medium or higher soil fertility, with a rotation of more than 4 years, and must not be continuous cropping or alternating cropping; wheat, corn, sorghum, rapeseed, potato, etc. are suitable preceding crops, and legume crops prone to Sclerotinia rot should not be used as preceding crops.

Note2. Land preparation and fertilization methods for the planting site:
Sunflowers have a well-developed root system and vigorous plants. Deep plowing and land preparation can effectively promote root growth and help the roots absorb water and nutrients. Applying sufficient base fertilizer and properly topdressing at the bud stage can effectively increase yield. In production, generally apply 20 jin of diammonium phosphate, 15 jin of urea, 15 jin of potassium, and 1.5 jin of zinc sulfate per mu as base fertilizer, and topdress 25 jin of urea per mu at the bud stage.

Note 3: Choose suitable sunflower varieties:
For summer-sown confectionery sunflowers, varieties such as LD5009 and SH909 can generally be selected, and for oilseed sunflowers, varieties such as S606, KF366, and Aitoudatou can be selected.

Note 4: Sunflower sowing time and methods:
Choosing a good sowing period is an important factor affecting sunflower yield and quality. In mountainous areas, sowing from May 25 to June 10 is more suitable, and in plains areas, summer sowing from June 25 to July 10 is relatively suitable. When sowing, use wide and narrow row planting, with a 1-2-1 sowing pattern.

Note 5: Thin and fill in seedlings at the right time:
The density of hybrid sunflowers has a relatively large impact on yield, so seedlings should be retained strictly according to variety requirements to prevent excessive density. After emergence, seedling inspection should be carried out promptly. If serious missing seedlings or broken rows are found, soak seeds to sprout and replant with water as soon as possible and as early as possible to ensure a full stand.

  Note 6: Sunflower thinning methods:
Sunflowers grow slowly at the seedling stage and the seedlings are weak, so cultivation, weeding, thinning, and final thinning should be done well. Thin and finalize seedlings at 2 pairs of true leaves, leaving one plant per hole. The 1st cultivation should be carried out at 1-2 pairs of true leaves together with thinning and final thinning, to a depth of 10 cm. The 2nd cultivation should be carried out 1 week after final thinning, to a depth of 15 cm. The 3rd cultivation should be completed before row closure, to a depth of 20 cm.
