How should yardlong beans be managed during the growing period? What techniques can make yardlong beans set more pods? We would also like experienced growers to share their advice. In general, with open-field cultivation of yardlong beans, few farmers prune or train the plants, which leads to tangled branches that shade one another, reducing flower bud differentiation on side branches and lowering the rate of flowering and pod setting. This results in lower yields in the mid-to-late stage of yardlong bean growth, severe "summer dormancy" during the hot season, and reduced returns. Therefore, Zhongdiwang has compiled the methods for training yardlong bean branches during the growing period, listed in detail below for growers' reference.
Step 1.Side buds from the base of the yardlong bean plant up to 50 cm above the ground should be removed promptly. Because yardlong bean pods are long, pods growing at the bottom of the plant will touch the ground, making them prone to disease infection or being bitten and eaten by soil-dwelling pests, which affects yardlong bean growth. At the same time, the lower side buds will also compete with the main vine for nutrients, affecting the vigor of the main vine.
When the lower side buds of yardlong beans grow to 2-3 cm, they should be removed promptly to improve air circulation and light penetration at the base of the plant, promote thicker and stronger main vines, and encourage earlier flowering and pod setting.
Step 2.During the pod-setting process of yardlong beans, attention should be paid to pinching the side shoots, by removing the growing tips of side branches produced on the main vines. When flower buds and leaf buds sprout at the same time in the leaf axils of the middle and upper parts of the main vine, the side branches sprouting from the leaf buds should be removed promptly; when only leaf buds sprout in the leaf axils of the yardlong bean without flower buds, the side branch can be pinched when it grows to 2 leaves, which can also promote the formation of a flower cluster on the side branch, thereby increasing the number of flower buds and raising the pod-setting rate.
Step 3.Pinch the growing tips of the main vines of yardlong beans. When the main vine grows above the wire, it should be pinched promptly, which helps control plant growth, increase the number of side branches, promote flower bud differentiation on side branches, and raise the number of pods set.
