Garlic is one of the most common foods on the dining table; it can be eaten raw or used as a seasoning, and it is an ideal cash crop. Therefore, Zhongdiwang has compiled two garlic growing methods, mulched and open-field, listed in detail below for growers' reference.

     I. Mulched garlic growing method:

Step 1.
Before sowing garlic, plow deep and harrow fine, prepare the soil carefully, and level the bed surface. Apply 5000 kg of organic fertilizer, 50 kg of cake fertilizer, 50 kg of diammonium phosphate, and 30 kg of potassium sulfate fertilizer per mu. After preparing the soil, make hidden-ditch raised beds; the bed surface should be 20-25 cm narrower than the plastic film, and the ditch should be 25 cm deep and 25 cm wide.

Step 2.Because garlic is pre-sprouted before sowing, the sowing time for mulched garlic can be 5-7 days later than for open-field garlic; it can be sown around October 15, with a planting density of 35000-40000 plants per mu.

Step 3.Mulched garlic is generally watered lightly. The first watering is done right after sowing, the second when the seedlings are about to emerge, one watering at the seedling stage, one before overwintering, one at the greening stage, and one at the scape differentiation stage. Before scape pulling, water 3-4 times, then stop watering 5-7 days before scape pulling to make pulling easier. After scape pulling, water 3-4 times. Mulched garlic pulls scapes 5-7 days earlier than open-field garlic.
For garlic that cannot push through the film, the seedlings must be helped out by hand. When the garlic scapes show their buds, the plastic film can be removed, and weeds pulled at the same time.

Step 4.The main pests of garlic are onion thrips and garlic maggots. For control, spray 80% dichlorvos at 1200 times to kill onion thrips, and drench the roots with 90% trichlorfon at 1000 times to kill garlic maggots. The main diseases are leaf blight and soft rot. For control, disinfect the soil with a 0.5% copper sulfate solution before sowing; if disease occurs, spray 80% chlorothalonil at 800 times.

  II. Open-field garlic growing method:

Step 1.
Because garlic has a shallow root system and weak absorption, sandy loam that is easy to drain and irrigate, loose, and fertile is best. Generally plow three times and harrow three times so the soil is fine, crumbly, and level, which helps rooting and seedling emergence. On the basis of deep plowing and careful preparation, irrigated fields are best made into beds: bed width 1-1.5 m, ditch width 30 cm, ditch depth 25 cm, with the middle and surrounding ditches appropriately deepened to help drainage and irrigation, and 5-7 rows of garlic planted in each bed.

Step 2.Before sowing, garlic needs pre-sprouting and seed treatment with phoxim. Open furrows 10 cm deep and 6-7 cm wide, and cover with 3-4 cm of soil after sowing. Sow around October 10. The density is 35000-38000 plants per mu.

Step 3.Garlic should be watered immediately after sowing, then watered again after 5-6 days, and given a third watering after the seedlings have all emerged; after that, cultivate and hoe. Water once in winter, and at the greening stage hoe and cultivate in time, while applying 2000-3000 kg of organic fertilizer and 30-40 kg of nitrogen fertilizer per mu. During the garlic scape growth period, water 3-4 times to keep the soil moist.
Stop watering 5 days before scape pulling to make pulling easier. During the bulb swelling stage, water 4-5 times. Stop watering 5-6 days before harvesting the bulbs to make harvest easier. In addition, during the garlic growing period, weeds in the garlic field should be hoed out in time; after sowing garlic, spray the soil surface with 1.5% acetochlor to control weeds.

Garlic is generally harvested 24-28 days after scape pulling, and on clay soil 14-16 days after scape pulling. Open-field garlic is delayed by 5-10 days compared with mulched garlic; bulbs harvested at this time do not split and are tightly wrapped. Choose a sunny day and harvest when the soil is fairly dry. After harvesting, dry them promptly to prevent a loss of quality.
