How should a ginseng planting site be chosen? How should the soil be treated before planting ginseng? We ask knowledgeable readers to help explain. The fleshy root of ginseng is a famous tonic and restorative medicine, suitable for regulating blood pressure, restoring heart function, neurasthenia and physical weakness, and it also has expectorant, stomachic, diuretic and stimulant effects. This has led to an ever-growing demand for ginseng, which in turn drives the ginseng growing industry. However, the key to ginseng cultivation lies in the choice of the ginseng planting site, so Zhongdi Network has compiled ginseng's soil requirements and the pre-planting preparation methods for a ginseng garden, listed in detail below for readers' reference.
Ginseng's vegetation requirements for the planting site:
Woodland dominated by broadleaf forest or mixed coniferous-broadleaf forest, with shrubs mainly of lespedeza, hazel and similar species, is suitable for planting; other woodland and farmland should be used only after soil improvement.
Ginseng's soil texture requirements:
It is best to choose yellow sandy humus soil, black sandy humus soil, loam or sandy loam, with organic matter content above 3%, a solid, liquid and gas ratio of 1:1:2, slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5-6.5), relatively high nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium content, and fairly abundant trace elements. The soil should have good granular structure and strong water- and fertilizer-holding capacity.
Ginseng's terrain requirements:
Flat land, low hills and hillsides within 25° are suitable; sloped land over 25° should not be used. Slope aspects facing east, south and north are preferable. Use terrain and topography that allow easy irrigation and drainage and are not prone to frost damage.
Preparing the ginseng garden before planting:
1. Timing of land preparation in the ginseng garden: generally about one month before planting ginseng, break up and finely crumble the soil, then make beds for planting.
2. Methods of land preparation in the ginseng garden:According to the local soil conditions, dig or machine-plow the soil to a depth of more than 10 cm; on flat land or gentle slopes the proportion of yellow soil should be no less than 50%, with uniform depth; remove stones and debris, determine the bed direction and bed position, plan the locations of drainage ditches and water-retaining dams, form soil ridges, turn and mix 2-3 times, sieve the soil, and if the black-yellow soil ratio is not reached, improve the soil with imported soil.
3. Disinfection of the ginseng garden soil:
Before ginseng is planted, disease and pest prevention can be carried out together with bed making. Use pesticides such as carbendazim, hymexazol and quicklime to disinfect the soil; use spot treatment, abamectin and chlorpyrifos, etc. for pest control. After testing, quicklime and similar materials should be used to improve the soil according to the test results.
(Note: Land preparation in the ginseng garden is strictly forbidden on rainy days.)
Because ginseng is mainly grown in beds, the bed specifications are generally determined by the terrain, soil conditions, type of frame and the method of sowing or transplanting.
1. Timing of bed making in the ginseng garden: for spring sowing of germinated seeds or transplanting, beds should be made 7-10 days before sowing or transplanting; for autumn sowing of cracked seeds or transplanting, make the beds and sow or transplant at the same time.
2. Method of bed making in the ginseng garden: first drive wooden stakes according to the bed position and stretch the bed position line, dig up, crumble and sieve the soil on the bed position, then turn the soil outside the bed position line onto the bed position, crumble and sieve it, spread the soil flat, and make the bed according to the specifications, with the middle of the bed surface slightly higher and the two sides slightly lower, forming a convex shape.
