The disease resistance of the African disease-resistant wild pumpkin was introduced through traditional backcross breeding into a traditional papaya-type pumpkin, so that the new variety has the flavor of a local pumpkin as well as the disease resistance of the African disease-resistant wild species. The new disease-resistant pumpkin variety 'Hualien AVRDC No. 2 - Youwang', developed by the Hualien District Agricultural Improvement Station of the Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan and the internationally renowned AVRDC - The World Vegetable Center, can resist two viruses. Although traditional Chinese pumpkin is more heat-tolerant than Western pumpkin, the problem of viral disease means that the planting period is also concentrated from October to February of the following year, so production is concentrated from February to May. Because prices are lower during the peak production season, when planting was delayed by one month to mid-March in a farmer demonstration field, it could be seen that 'Youwang' had better virus resistance than the control variety. Therefore, it can be planted in mid-March or even in April and harvested in early July to mid-August when pumpkin prices are better. As long as attention is paid to the control of Phytophthora disease during the plum rain season and the control of melon flies during the flowering period, the yield per hectare can reach more than 32 tons, while organic cultivation can reach more than 20 tons.
