Yellow leaves are a common problem in plant care; only by identifying the cause can you treat it properly
Yellow leaves are one of the most common problems in the care of flowers and green plants, referring to leaves that gradually turn yellow from green and lose their luster, and in severe cases dry up and fall off. It is not an independent disease in itself, but a signal sent when a plant's growth state becomes abnormal, and it is often closely related to watering, light, nutrients or root health.
In terms of causes, yellow leaves can roughly be divided into several categories. Overwatering keeps the soil moist for a long time, the roots cannot breathe properly and may even rot, and the leaves turn yellow and soft; long-term lack of water, on the other hand, mostly starts with the leaf tips and leaf edges drying out and turning yellow. When light is insufficient, the leaf color fades and turns yellow, while scorching sun easily causes burn-like yellow patches. In addition, alkaline soil affects the absorption of iron, often causing new leaves to turn yellow, while nitrogen deficiency mostly shows as old leaves turning evenly yellow.
When you encounter yellow leaves, do not rush to fertilize; first judge the cause together with your daily care routine. Checking whether the potting soil is too wet or too dry, and observing whether the yellow leaves appear on new leaves or old leaves and whether the distribution is overall or localized, can all provide clues. If it is waterlogging and root rot, control watering and loosen the soil in time, and in severe cases take the plant out of the pot, trim the rotted roots and replant; for yellow leaves caused by nutrient deficiency, apply light fertilizer frequently and supplement the corresponding nutrients.
For daily prevention, keep the potting soil loose and breathable, water so that the soil dries between waterings, and place the plant in a ventilated spot with scattered light, and most common green plants will maintain a deep green leaf color. A small number of yellow leaves produced by the natural metabolism of old leaves is normal; just remove them in time, and there is no need to worry excessively.
