An Introduction to the Characteristics of the Yijia Black Pig Breed and Its Ecological Farming Value
The Yijia black pig is a local black pig group that has been raised for generations in the mountainous areas inhabited by the Yi people. It is mainly distributed in the high-altitude mountain regions of Yunnan, Liangshan in Sichuan, and western Guizhou. It is mostly kept free-range or semi-free-range on forested slopes, and it is a native pig breed preserved by the local people over generations, carrying a strong flavor of ethnic food culture.
In appearance, the Yijia black pig has a completely black coat, a compact and sturdy body, and thick, strong legs. It is good at running and climbing hills, and it is resistant to cold and tolerant of coarse feed. Because its growth rate is slower, its feeding cycle is longer than that of ordinary commercial pigs, but intramuscular fat is deposited relatively fully, and the meat is firm and fragrant without being greasy. It is especially outstanding when used to cure bacon and ham, and on the market it is often classified as ecological native pork.
In terms of farming, Yijia black pigs are mostly fed agricultural by-products such as corn, potatoes, buckwheat, and green forage, and generally rely very little on commercial compound feed, so the fattening cycle is relatively long. During raising, attention should be paid to keeping the pen dry and well ventilated, doing a good job of cold protection and warmth in winter and spring, vaccinating regularly, and arranging deworming. Free-range areas should be kept away from water sources to prevent the pig herd from damaging vegetation or polluting the environment.
Overall, the advantages of the Yijia black pig lie in its meat quality and ecological farming method, and it is suitable for moderate-scale free-range raising by mountain farmers, but its slow growth and relatively limited fattening efficiency should also be faced squarely. Only by arranging the marketing schedule reasonably and doing solid work on disease prevention and daily management can quality advantages be turned into real returns.
