Zhushan Xiugu is a well-known azalea viewing destination, where the azaleas usually bloom in a concentrated burst in spring, creating a sea of flowers across the hillsides. So-called off-season blooming refers to the phenomenon in which azaleas open early outside their normal flowering period, such as in autumn or winter; it occurs occasionally in many mountain scenic areas and often draws visitors to stop and admire the display.

Off-season blooming is mostly related to abnormal climate. If temperatures are on the high side in autumn and winter and rainfall is suitable, some flower buds mistake it for the arrival of spring and break dormancy to open early. In addition, changes in mountain microclimates, day length and the difference between day and night temperatures can also affect the pace of flower bud development, causing individual plants or azaleas in local areas to bloom first.

From a viewing perspective, azaleas that bloom off-season still have vivid flower colors, adding a distinctive scene to the bleak autumn and winter season. For the plants themselves, however, blooming early consumes more nutrients; if low temperatures suddenly arrive after they open, the flowers and flower buds are easily damaged by cold, and the number of blooms the following spring may also be affected.

When azaleas bloom off-season, care can include a suitable supplement of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer to help the plants recover their growth. Before winter arrives, cover the root area to keep it warm and reduce the risk of cold damage. At ordinary times, keep the soil slightly moist but not waterlogged, and if necessary thin out overly dense flower buds so that nutrients are supplied in a concentrated way; the following spring there is still a chance to see the valley full of blossoms again.
