Autumn cabbage is a common vegetable in autumn and winter, and its growing period falls during the stage when temperatures gradually decline, so water management directly affects seedling emergence, rosette growth and head formation quality. Reasonable watering must both meet the needs of plant growth and avoid waterlogging in the field, which can lead to disease.

Watering should be carried out in stages. After sowing, give one thorough watering to ensure the seeds germinate and emerge smoothly; during the seedling stage the roots are relatively shallow, so water little and often, keeping the soil alternately dry and moist; during the rosette stage, control water moderately to toughen the seedlings and encourage the roots to grow downward; once the heading stage begins, water demand is greatest, so a sufficient supply should be maintained to help the heads form tightly.

Watering is best done in the early morning or evening, avoiding the high-temperature period at midday, to reduce evaporation and stress on the roots. For irrigation methods, furrow irrigation, sprinkler irrigation or drip irrigation can be used, watering lightly with small amounts and avoiding flooding irrigation. After each watering, combine it with hoeing to loosen the soil, which both preserves moisture and improves soil aeration.

Autumn cabbage likes moisture but fears waterlogging, so during continuous rain it should be drained promptly to prevent prolonged water accumulation in the field from causing root oxygen deficiency and triggering diseases such as soft rot. As harvest approaches, watering should be gradually reduced to lower the plant's water content, making storage easier and reducing rotting.

As for common problems, watering too much one time and too little the next can easily cause the heads to split or fail to form solidly, while long-term excessive humidity in the field can easily trigger downy mildew and soft rot. Therefore, the amount and frequency of watering should be adjusted flexibly according to weather changes, soil moisture conditions and plant growth, so as to supply water evenly and harvest autumn cabbage of better quality.
