An Introduction to the Breed Characteristics and Farming Value of Xuefeng Silkie Chickens
The Xuefeng Silkie chicken is a local chicken breed native to the Xuefeng Mountain area of Hunan, named after the Xuefeng Mountain region where it is mainly produced, and it is raised in relatively large numbers in Huaihua and the surrounding counties and cities. Having long been bred in the local mountainous environment, it has strong adaptability and is a local silkie chicken group that combines meat value with tonic value.
In appearance, the Xuefeng Silkie chicken has the typical characteristics of silkie chickens: the skin, meat, bones, beak and feet are mostly black, while feather colors are more varied. It is medium in size with a sturdy constitution, tolerates coarse feed well, and has good foraging ability and disease resistance, making it suitable for free-range rearing in mountainous and forested areas. Its meat is tender and delicious, and among local people it is often used to make tonic soup.
Compared with the well-known Silkie (silky-feathered silkie chicken), the Xuefeng Silkie chicken looks more like an ordinary native chicken, but it is likewise identified mainly by its black skin, black meat and black bones. As a local breed, it retains relatively good genetic diversity and is one of the valuable resources for developing specialty farming.
In terms of farming, chicks are fairly sensitive to temperature during the brooding stage, so warmth, ventilation and cleanliness must be well managed to reduce stress. After the chicks are taken off heat, they can gradually be moved to free-range rearing, with appropriate supplemental feeding of corn and green feed, and vaccination carried out according to schedule. In recent years, drug residue issues have attracted attention, so farming should follow standardized medication practices and observe withdrawal periods to ensure the health of the chickens and the quality of the birds sent to market.
