Indoor foliage plants are plants whose main ornamental appeal lies in the shape and color of their leaves and their overall plant form. Most originate in tropical or subtropical regions and are accustomed to warm, humid, semi-shaded environments. They generally have strong shade tolerance and can grow normally under indoor indirect light, which makes them a common greening choice for homes, offices and similar places.

There are many kinds of common indoor foliage plants, such as pothos (Epipremnum aureum), Swiss cheese plant (Monstera deliciosa), money tree (Pachira aquatica), snake plant (Sansevieria trifasciata), rubber plant (Ficus elastica), areca palm (Dypsis lutescens), Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema) and peperomia (Peperomia). These plants vary greatly in form; some have broad, spreading leaves, while others have leaves rich in markings, so they can be arranged according to space size and light conditions to create different decorative effects.

For care, most foliage plants prefer bright indirect light and should be kept out of long periods of direct sunlight to avoid scorching the leaves. Watering should follow the principle of letting the soil dry out before watering again, giving a thorough soak once the surface of the potting soil is dry, to prevent waterlogging that causes root rot. During the growing season, a diluted liquid fertilizer can be applied as appropriate, and the leaves should be misted or wiped frequently to maintain air humidity and keep the leaf surface clean.

Foliage plants can not only decorate indoor spaces but also visually relieve fatigue and add a natural feel to the environment. Note that the sap of some varieties, such as pothos and Chinese evergreen, contains irritating substances, so it is best to wear gloves when pruning or repotting, and to place the plants where children and pets can hardly reach them.
