An Introduction to Tropical Fish Species and Key Care Points for Common Varieties
Tropical fish species generally refer to ornamental fish that live in tropical and subtropical waters, and they are deeply loved by aquarium enthusiasts for their bright body colors and diverse forms. According to their living environment, they can be divided into two major categories: freshwater tropical fish and saltwater tropical fish. Among them, freshwater varieties are less difficult to keep and are the mainstream choice for home aquariums.
Common freshwater tropical fish include small varieties such as guppies, zebrafish, neon tetras, tiger barbs, mollies, and swordtails. They are small in size and look good in schools, making them suitable for matching with aquatic plant landscaping. Medium-sized varieties such as angelfish, discus, oscars, and blood parrots have elegant postures or intense colors, making them even more outstanding in ornamental value. Saltwater tropical fish such as clownfish are brilliantly colored, but they have higher requirements for water quality and equipment, making them more suitable for experienced keepers.
When keeping tropical fish, the first thing is to stabilize the water temperature. Most varieties are suitable for living in warm water, and heating equipment is needed to keep them warm when the seasons change. Second, attention should be paid to water quality management, with regular water changes and dechlorination in advance, to avoid drastic fluctuations in water temperature and water quality that cause discomfort to the fish. When mixing species, the habits of the varieties should also be considered. Fish that are aggressive or relatively large in size should not be kept in the same tank as small, gentle fish, to avoid chasing and biting.
When selecting tropical fish, you can observe whether they swim actively, whether their body surface is intact, and whether their fins are spread out. Individuals in good condition are more likely to adapt to a new environment. Because there are many kinds of tropical fish and their habits vary greatly, beginners are advised to start with hardy and easy-to-keep varieties such as guppies and zebrafish, and try more difficult varieties after gaining some experience.
