What are the common types of veterinary antidiarrheal drugs?
Antidiarrheal drugs are a class of drugs that can stop diarrhea. Diarrhea is a symptom or a disease of many conditions. In a sense, diarrhea is a manifestation of the body's protective defense mechanism, as it can expel toxins from the body, but diarrhea affects the absorption of nutrients; in particular, prolonged and severe diarrhea leads to dehydration and electrolyte disturbances of potassium, sodium, chloride, etc., and even acidosis. In treatment, comprehensive measures should be taken according to the cause and condition of the disease, combined with the characteristics of each drug's action, that is, causal treatment and symptomatic treatment simultaneously. Diarrhea is mostly caused by pathogenic microorganisms, so it is generally used in combination with antimicrobial drugs, anti-inflammatory drugs, and antifrothing drugs.
According to the characteristics of pharmacological action, antidiarrheal drugs can be divided into three categories:
1. Protective antidiarrheal drugs, such as tannic acid, tannalbin, bismuth subnitrate, bismuth subcarbonate, etc., which form a protective layer by coagulating proteins, protect the intestinal tract from irritation by harmful factors, reduce secretion, and have an astringent and mucosal-protective effect.
2. Adsorptive antidiarrheal drugs, such as medicinal charcoal, kaolin, etc., which through surface adsorption can adsorb water, gas, bacteria, viruses, toxins and poisons, etc., reducing damage to the intestinal mucosa.
3. Diphenoxylate, compound camphor tincture, atropine, etc., stop diarrhea by inhibiting intestinal smooth muscle motility.
