The "Taiwan New Year Bird Count Carnival" entered its second year this year. Nearly a thousand people took part during the event period, recording a total of 319 bird species and 203617 individuals, and fully recording 25 endemic bird species of Taiwan, China, breaking last year's record. Ho Yi-hsien, secretary-general of the Taipei Wild Bird Society, said first: "Most people think biological surveys are difficult, but in fact anyone can take part, and bird activity is an important indicator of whether the environment is good or not," inviting everyone to join in winter bird monitoring.

The Bird Count Carnival imitates North America's century-old tradition of the "Christmas Bird Count." Since 2009, Taiwan, China has also conducted the "Taiwan Breeding Bird Survey" every year from March to June, mainly focusing on endemic species, endemic subspecies and breeding birds.

However, Lin Ta-li, assistant researcher in the Habitat Ecology Division of the Endemic Species Research Institute under the Council of Agriculture, said that the "Taiwan Breeding Bird Survey" became increasingly stable by 2013, so at the end of 2013 the Chinese Wild Bird Federation, the Taipei Wild Bird Society, the Kaohsiung Wild Bird Society and the Endemic Species Research Institute under the Council of Agriculture jointly organized and launched the "Taiwan New Year Bird Count Carnival" monitoring activity, shifting the focus to changes in winter bird numbers, including migratory birds. From December 20 last year to January 11 this year, a total of 23 days, 37 partner units across the country were called on to adopt sample areas to count birds.

Participation numbers and bird species records increased, and the vagrant Siberian Crane and the Philippine endemic Luzon Duck were also found
