Black Carp Pictures: Appearance Features and How to Identify Them
The black carp is a common freshwater farmed fish in China, and together with the grass carp, silver carp and bighead carp it is known as one of the Four Major Chinese Carps. Its body is cylindrical, with a blue-black back and a grayish-white belly; its overall body color is on the dark side, which usually makes it fairly easy to identify in photos. Most of the black carp pictures seen online show this typical feature.
When looking at black carp pictures, you can focus on several parts. The black carp has a darker head, large and neatly arranged scales, dark gray or black fins, and a sturdy build. Compared with the grass carp, the black carp is clearly darker in body color, while the grass carp tends toward yellow-green; put pictures of the two side by side and the difference is obvious at a glance.
It should be noted that although the black carp and the Spanish mackerel are often compared, they are two completely different fish. The Spanish mackerel is a saltwater fish with a long, narrow body, and it mostly appears in seafood pictures; the black carp, by contrast, is a freshwater fish that lives in rivers and lakes. When telling them apart, start with body shape, body color and living environment to avoid confusion.
The black carp inhabits the middle and lower layers of the water and feeds on mollusks such as river snails and freshwater mussels, so in many places it is also called the snail-eating carp. Its flesh is firm and suits many cooking methods, including braising in soy sauce and curing, making it one of the common food fish on the market. Looking at black carp pictures often and getting familiar with its appearance can also help when buying and choosing fish.
