Characteristics of the genus Zantedeschia (calla lilies), common varieties and care methods
Zantedeschia is a genus of perennial herbaceous plants in the family Araceae, native to southern Africa, and named for its spathe, whose shape closely resembles a horse's hoof. What people usually call the flower is in fact a bract, while the upright column-like structure in the middle is the true spadix; this distinctive form has made it a classic material for cut flowers and potted plants.
The genus does not contain a great many species. In cultivation, the most common is the white-flowered calla lily, along with the yellow calla lily, the red calla lily and numerous horticultural hybrids, with flower colors covering white, yellow, pink, red, purple and other color ranges. Different varieties differ in plant height, leaf markings and cold hardiness, so when buying you can choose according to your color preference and your own environment.
As for care, plants in the genus Zantedeschia prefer a warm, humid environment and need ample light but cannot tolerate harsh sun, nor do they tolerate waterlogged potting soil over long periods. During the growing season, keep the potting soil moist and pay attention to ventilation; in winter, move them indoors to keep warm. Some tuberous varieties enter dormancy after flowering, at which point watering should be reduced. If the leaves turn yellow, it is most likely related to overwatering, insufficient light or unsuitable temperatures, and you can simply adjust your routine care accordingly.
The calla lily has an elegant flower shape and pure flower colors, and is often given the meaning of purity and fidelity. It is a common choice for wedding bouquets and festive cut flowers, and also adds a touch of elegance when placed in the living room or study. One thing to note: the whole plant contains irritating sap such as calcium oxalate, which may cause discomfort in people with sensitive skin after contact, so it is best to wear gloves when pruning or repotting, and also keep young children and pets at home from eating it by mistake.
