Koi are one of the most common ornamental fish, developed over a long period of selective breeding from carp. They have vivid body colors and varied patterns, making them suitable both for garden ponds and for keeping in tanks to accent water features. They are quite adaptable, but if you want your koi to thrive in good condition, you still need to master scientific keeping methods.

Water quality is the foundation of keeping koi well. The water used should ideally be left to stand in the sun to remove chlorine before going into the tank, and a filtration system should be set up in the pond to help break down leftover food and waste. Normally, change the water a little at a time and more frequently, replacing only part of the old water each time, to avoid drastic fluctuations in water temperature and quality and to keep the fish in a stable living environment.

For feeding, you need to feed at fixed times and in fixed amounts. When the water temperature is suitable, you can feed once or twice a day, and it is best if the koi finish the food within a few minutes, to prevent excess leftover food from spoiling the water. You can choose special compound feed, supplemented appropriately with vegetables, bloodworms, and so on, for more balanced nutrition. When the water temperature is on the low side, koi digestion slows down, so you should reduce feeding or even stop feeding temporarily.

Stocking density also needs attention. Koi are relatively large and consume a lot of oxygen, so the pond or tank should not be too crowded, and aeration equipment should be provided when necessary. If you are considering mixed keeping, choose species with gentle habits and similar water quality requirements, and leave enough space for activity to reduce the risk of fighting and disease transmission.

In daily management, observe the fish's condition often. If you find koi gasping at the surface, rubbing against the tank, or showing abnormalities on the body surface, you should promptly check the water quality and take measures. Overall, if you keep the water well, feed properly, and maintain a reasonable density, koi will grow strong and have bright, beautiful colors.
