Huangshan Maojian is a distinctive green tea produced in the Huangshan area of Anhui Province.
Huangshan Maojian is a green tea produced in the Huangshan area of Anhui Province, named for its fine, tightly rolled leaves covered in white down. It is an unfermented tea that retains relatively large amounts of the natural substances found in fresh leaves, and it is a common category among local spring teas.
In terms of quality, the dry tea has an emerald-green, lustrous color with visible white down. After brewing, the liquor is tender-green and bright, with a delicate aroma that is often a fresh, tender scent or a chestnut-like note, and it tastes fresh and brisk with a sweet aftertaste. The raw material is mostly picked in spring, with single buds or one bud and one leaf being preferred; the more tender the leaves, the more prominent the white down tends to be.
For brewing, a glass cup or a white porcelain gaiwan is suitable, and the water temperature should be around 80 degrees; water that is too hot can scald the buds and leaves, making the tea liquor bitter. For daily storage, keep it sealed, away from light, moisture, and strong odors. If the quantity is small, it can be refrigerated; before taking out the tea, let it return to room temperature before opening the container, so it does not absorb moisture or pick up odors.
Many tea lovers easily confuse Huangshan Maojian with Huangshan Maofeng. The two have neighboring or overlapping places of origin, but they each have their own characteristics in picking standards, appearance, and taste, so when buying, they can be distinguished by the form of the dry tea. In addition, it belongs to the same broad green tea category as Maojian teas from other regions, such as Xinyang Maojian and Duyun Maojian, only the growing environments differ, and the flavors each have their own merits.
