Porcupine Picture Gallery: Meet the Spiny Rodent
The porcupine is a large rodent covered in sharp quills, also known among the public as the arrow pig or quill pig. As you can see in porcupine pictures, its back and flanks are covered with long dark brown quills, often tipped with white; when threatened, it raises its quills and shakes its tail to make a rattling sound that scares off predators.
Porcupine pictures also make its overall form clear: a stocky body, a small head with small eyes, and short but powerful limbs, with the quills on its back swaying gently as it walks. Many people easily confuse porcupines with hedgehogs, but comparing pictures reveals obvious differences: the porcupine is larger, and its quills are longer and harder, while the hedgehog is round and small, with short, dense spines; the two actually belong to different animal groups.
Porcupines mostly live in mountain forests, grassy slopes and near farmland, and are accustomed to coming out at night to forage, mainly eating plant roots, stems, fruits and bark; they are relatively common in the mountainous areas of southern China. When viewing porcupine pictures, pay close attention to the distribution and length of the quills and the overall coat color, as these features are the key basis for identifying a porcupine.
Porcupine pictures are often used for animal education, species identification and agricultural news illustrations. When choosing or shooting such pictures, try to pick photos with sufficient light that fully show the quills and body shape, so it is easier to see what this spiny animal really looks like.
