Gushen is the name of an edible mushroom variety (strain), appearing mostly in the artificial cultivation and the buying and selling of mushrooms, used to refer to a cultivated line with a clear origin and relatively stable traits. It should be noted that the same type of mushroom may be called different names in different regions and at different spawn farms, so before introducing a strain it is best to verify the line information with the local spawn station or agricultural technology department, to avoid losses caused by name confusion.

In terms of common characteristics, the fruiting bodies of artificially cultivated edible mushrooms consist of a cap and a stipe, with tender tissue and a fresh, savory flavor, and they contain protein, various amino acids, fungal polysaccharides and minerals; they have a high water content and low calories, making them a good complementary ingredient in the daily diet. The mushrooms produced by Gushen are likewise suitable for fresh sale on the market, and their storage life can also be extended by drying, salting and other methods.

For cultivation, Gushen is usually produced using the bag substrate method, and the substrate is mostly composed of wood chips, cottonseed hulls, corn cobs and other agricultural and forestry by-products combined with bran. During the spawn-running stage, the site should be kept clean, the temperature stable and light should be avoided; after entering the fruiting stage, ventilation should be strengthened and humidity appropriately increased, so that the mushrooms fruit uniformly in an environment with suitable temperature and humidity.

During production, pollution-free measures should be implemented, such as selecting clean, fresh culture medium materials, focusing on prevention for pests and diseases, not using prohibited drugs, and promptly cleaning up spent mushroom bags after harvest and disinfecting the site properly. When buying for the household, mushrooms with intact fruiting bodies and a normal smell are best; after purchase they should be kept refrigerated and eaten as soon as possible, so that the flavor and texture are better guaranteed.
