Treatment of cold-stress diarrhea in winter piglets
Diarrhea is a disease that frequently occurs in weaned piglets and in medium pigs weighing 25-30 kg. In winter, the cold climate, lower temperatures, and large day-night temperature differences make piglets more prone to cold-stress diarrhea. Treating this disease with drugs alone has poor results and it easily recurs. A treatment approach based mainly on physical therapy, supplemented by drug therapy, can achieve twice the result with half the effort.

Clinical symptoms: Affected piglets show reddening of the entire skin and ears, high body temperature, and rough, pale coat; the anus is red, swollen, and everted, the back is arched and the belly is tucked up, they fear cold and huddle together, and they eat less or even stop eating. From the external appearance of dead pigs, the eyes are sunken, the whole body is emaciated, dehydration is present, and the coat is rough. Necropsy shows shedding of the gastrointestinal mucosa, diffuse hemorrhage of the stomach and intestinal wall, thinning of the intestinal wall, and undigested feed and unformed feces in the intestinal tract.

Prevention and treatment methods: Raise the pen temperature: raise the temperature of the piglet house to 25°C. At the same time, strengthen feeding management; using coal cinder ash as bedding in the pig house can absorb moisture and have a disinfecting effect. Feed ginger sugar water: boil 150 grams of ginger and 250 grams of brown sugar in water, let it cool, then mix with feed and give it in one feeding. At the same time, give each affected piglet one tablet of analgin, 2 times a day, for 3 consecutive days. Feed Kuding tea water: for piglets over 20 days old that have already started eating and have diarrhea, add Kuding tea leaves (old or tender leaves are both acceptable) to water, boil for a few minutes, then let it cool to warm and feed. For piglets under 20 days old that have not started eating and have diarrhea, chop the Kuding tea, add water, boil it, and feed it to the sow, so that the medicinal effect is exerted through the piglets' nursing. If the medicinal liquid is too bitter, add a little salt. Feed the medicine 2-3 times a day for 2-3 consecutive days to cure it. Feed garlic vinegar liquid: mash 30 grams of garlic into garlic paste, add 150 milliliters of aged vinegar and 5 grams of Bai Cao Shuang, stir thoroughly to mix evenly, and give it in one feeding, 2 times a day, for 2 consecutive days. Alternatively, use 200 milliliters of aged vinegar and 250 grams of scorched sorghum (ground into powder), mix evenly, and administer in one drench, 2 times a day, for 2 consecutive days. Feed multi-herb water: use 500 grams each of purslane, Dijincao, plantain herb, skullcap, coptis, and Amur corktree bark, decoct in water and feed, enough for 100 pigs weighing 10-20 kg to drink for 1 day, for 3-5 consecutive days. Alternatively, use 500 grams each of purslane, plantain herb, and fresh bamboo leaves, plus 300 grams of white sugar, decoct in water, mix with feed and feed; this is the amount for pigs for 1 day, divided into 3 feedings mixed with feed, for 3-5 consecutive days, with ideal results. Mixed treatment with gentamicin and ribavirin: for piglets with severe diarrhea, use 1 vial of gentamicin 80,000 international units plus 1 milliliter of ribavirin, mix and inject once from the piglet's Houhai acupoint; for severe cases inject 2 times a day, for mild cases 1 time a day, and continuous treatment for 3 days can lead to full recovery.
