Honey is a common natural sweet food; its main components are fructose and glucose, and it also contains small amounts of enzymes, amino acids and minerals. Many folk claims circulate about foods that clash with honey, for example that honey should not be eaten with tofu, scallions, Chinese chives or crucian carp, on the grounds that eating them together causes physical discomfort or hinders nutrient absorption.

Most of these claims come from traditional dietary experience and records in ancient texts, but from the perspective of modern nutrition, the vast majority of these clashing combinations have not been reliably verified by science. When healthy people eat honey together with these foods in normal amounts, it usually does not cause the harm the rumors describe, so there is no need to be overly nervous.

What really deserves attention are a few practical issues. Infants under one year of age are not advised to eat honey, because honey may carry Clostridium botulinum spores, and infants' intestinal function is not yet fully developed, so there is a risk of poisoning. At the same time, honey is high in sugar, so people with diabetes and those who need to control their blood sugar and weight should limit their intake.

When mixing honey into a drink, you should also avoid using boiling water; excessively high water temperature destroys the enzymes and volatile aroma compounds in honey, making the flavor worse, so it is generally recommended to dissolve it in warm boiled water. For daily storage, keep it sealed, away from light and protected from moisture, and keep the spoon dry when taking it out, so as to prevent the honey from absorbing moisture, fermenting and spoiling.

Overall, the so-called taboos about pairing honey with everyday foods are mostly rumors, and it is enough to view them rationally. Rather than fretting over claims of food clashes, it is better to focus on eating it in moderation, avoiding it for special groups of people, and mixing and storing it correctly; this way you can both enjoy honey's flavor and eat with more peace of mind.
