Bean sprout growing refers to the cultivation method of sprouting tender shoots from beans such as mung beans and soybeans under light-blocked, moisture-retaining conditions. Bean sprouts need no soil and no large growing area, and their production cycle is short; they can be grown at home in an ordinary container, making this a very low-threshold way to grow sprouting vegetables at home.

Before growing, select the beans first: choose plump seeds that are unbroken and free of mold, and remove the shriveled ones that float on the water. After washing the beans, soak them in warm water for several hours; once the seed coats have absorbed water and swollen, scoop them out and drain them, then spread them evenly in a container that can drain water, and cover them with a layer of wet cloth or gauze to block light and retain moisture.

Daily care mainly consists of watering and temperature control. Sprinkle water two or three times a day so the beans stay moist but not waterlogged; excess water at the bottom of the container should be poured off promptly, otherwise the roots rot easily and give off a bad smell. An ambient temperature of around 20 degrees is more suitable; if it is too low, sprouting is slow, while if it is too high, the beans spoil easily. Keep them away from light throughout as much as possible, so the sprouts stay white, tender, and crisp; too much light turns them green and gives them a bitter taste.

Generally, after about a week, the bean sprouts can be harvested once they have reached a suitable length. After rinsing them clean, they are easy to serve cold-tossed, stir-fried, or in soup. Bean sprouts grown at home do not rely on growth regulators, so they are more reassuring to eat, and harvesting them as needed keeps them fresher. If the beans become sticky or smell bad, it is mostly caused by infrequent watering or poor drainage; adjusting the care method in time can prevent this.
