Turfgrass types are the classification of grasses that can be used for lawns according to their botanical characteristics and growth habits. Common turfgrasses fall broadly into two categories: warm-season and cool-season. The former tolerates heat and drought and is suited to planting in southern regions, while the latter has good cold hardiness and is mostly used in the north. When choosing turfgrass, local climate, soil conditions and intended use should all be taken into account.

Among warm-season grasses, bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) has well-developed stolons, tolerates foot traffic and recovers strongly, so it is often used for sports fields and public green spaces. Manila grass and Taiwan grass, both in the genus Zoysia, have fine blades and form a smooth, attractive lawn, making them suitable for courtyards and ornamental lawns. In addition, St. Augustine grass (Stenotaphrum secundatum) and centipedegrass (Eremochloa ophiuroides) are also planted in warm, humid areas.

Among cool-season grasses, Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) and ryegrass (Lolium) are the most common. These grasses grow vigorously in spring and autumn and stay green for a long period, making them the mainstay of urban landscaping in the north. In practice, several cool-season grasses are often mixed and sown together so that their strengths offset their weaknesses, improving the lawn's overall stress resistance and ornamental effect.

As for maintenance, different turfgrasses vary considerably in mowing height, watering frequency and fertilizer requirements. Warm-season grasses grow quickly in summer and need timely mowing, while cool-season grasses require attention to diseases brought on by high summer heat and humidity. Understanding the characteristics of turfgrass types makes it easier to choose the right variety, whether for landscaping work or home courtyard planting, and reduces the maintenance burden later on.
