A Brief Introduction to the Care Methods and Application Value of Euphorbia tirucalli
Euphorbia tirucalli is a common succulent of the Euphorbiaceae family in home gardening, often called the dragon-bone pillar or dragon bone. Its stem is upright and columnar, with distinct ridges, and short spines grow on the ridges; its overall form is tall and imposing, with strong ornamental appeal. Although its appearance is similar to a cactus, it is not a cactus plant, but a member of the Euphorbiaceae family, genus Euphorbia.
In terms of care, Euphorbia tirucalli likes a warm, sunny and dry environment, is drought-tolerant and afraid of waterlogging, and is suitable for planting in loose, well-drained sandy soil. Daily watering should follow the principle of preferring dry over wet, and water thoroughly only after the potting soil has dried out completely; in winter, watering should be reduced to keep the potting soil on the dry side. During the growing season, it can be given plenty of light so the stem grows plump and sturdy; in midsummer it needs appropriate shading, and in winter it should be moved indoors to a warm place to avoid cold damage.
Euphorbia tirucalli is generally propagated by cuttings. After cutting off a healthy stem segment, first let the cut dry in a ventilated, shaded place, then insert it into slightly moist soil, and after some time it will take root and survive. When handling it, pay special attention that its white sap is toxic and may cause irritation on contact with the skin; it is recommended to wear gloves and to avoid contact by children and pets in the home.
In terms of application value, Euphorbia tirucalli has a tall, upright plant form and is suitable for placement on balconies, in courtyards or beside doors as an ornamental green plant; in feng shui symbolism it is also often regarded as a plant for protecting the home. In addition, it is often used as a grafting rootstock for cacti or succulents, and has a certain practical value in horticultural cultivation. As long as you master the rhythm of watering and light, even beginners can grow it well.
