What Plant Is the Silk Tree Flower? An Introduction to the Characteristics and Uses of Silk Tree Flowers
The silk tree flower is the blossom of the silk tree (Albizia julibrissin), a deciduous tree in the legume family Fabaceae. It is also known in folk usage by other names such as ronghua tree flower, night-closing flower, and horse mane flower. The silk tree has spreading branches, and its bipinnate compound leaves are as fine and dense as feathers. It enters its flowering season every summer, when the branches are covered with pink blossoms, giving it strong ornamental value.
The most obvious characteristic of the silk tree flower is its unique flower shape: the filaments of the small flowers are slender and cluster together in a downy form, looking like little pink fans, and from a distance like a stretch of rosy clouds. Its leaves spread open during the day and close in pairs at night or when the light dims, and the name "hehuan" (joyous union) is related to this habit.
In daily life, many people confuse the silk tree flower with mimosa. Although the two have similar leaf shapes and both have leaves that close, the silk tree is a tall tree while mimosa is a low-growing herbaceous plant, so the difference in form is very obvious. In addition, acacia (Acacia) and the silk tree are not the same plant either; the two differ in flower shape, flowering period, and growth habits, so attention should be paid when buying or planting them.
The silk tree flower has fairly wide uses. In landscaping it is often used as a street tree and shade tree, and it can also be made into a bonsai through pruning and wiring, placed in a courtyard or on a balcony. Its dried flower buds are also often used in traditional practice to steep in water or use as medicine, and are commonly believed to have a calming and mood-relieving effect. The silk tree likes light and tolerates drought, is not demanding about soil, and is not difficult to care for in daily maintenance, making it a tree species with both ornamental and practical value.
