Osmanthus varieties are usually divided into Golden Osmanthus, Silver Osmanthus, Orange Osmanthus and Four-Season Osmanthus
Osmanthus is an evergreen small tree or shrub of the genus Osmanthus in the family Oleaceae, and many cultivars have been formed through long-term cultivation and selection. In horticulture, it is customary to divide it by flower color and flowering habit into four major groups: Golden Osmanthus, Silver Osmanthus, Orange Osmanthus and Four-Season Osmanthus. Each major group also contains quite a few specific cultivars, with differences in flower color, leaf shape and fragrance.
Golden Osmanthus has golden-yellow flowers and a rich fragrance, blooms in autumn, and is the most common type in traditional cultivation. Silver Osmanthus has yellow-white or creamy-white flowers and a fresh, sweet fragrance, and the plant is generally relatively tall. Orange Osmanthus has flowers ranging from orange-yellow to orange-red, making it the most brilliantly colored type of osmanthus, with a relatively lighter fragrance. Four-Season Osmanthus can bloom several times a year, its floral fragrance is weaker, and it is very suitable for potted display on a balcony.
To identify osmanthus cultivars, mainly look at flower color, leaf shape and flowering period. Flower color is the most intuitive basis for judgment, and leaf size, edge shape and plant posture can also help distinguish them. The differences among cultivars within the same major group are relatively subtle; once ordinary enthusiasts remember the typical characteristics of the four major groups, they can basically tell them apart.
The care methods for different osmanthus cultivars are much the same; they all like a sunny, well-ventilated environment and suitable slightly acidic, loose soil. Water by letting the soil dry between waterings, apply dilute fertilizer frequently during the growing season, and prune appropriately after flowering, so the plant can grow vigorously and bloom abundantly. When choosing a cultivar, you can combine it with its purpose: for planting in the ground in a courtyard, Golden Osmanthus and Silver Osmanthus are more suitable, while for balcony potting you can consider Four-Season Osmanthus.
