A Brief Introduction to the Heqing Orchid Production Area and Representative Famous Cymbidium tortisepalum Varieties
Heqing is located in the northwest of Yunnan Province, under the administration of the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture and adjacent to Lijiang, and is a well-known orchid production area in northwestern Yunnan. It has a low-latitude plateau climate, with no severe cold in winter and no extreme heat in summer, humid air, and relatively well-preserved mountain vegetation, making it very suitable for the growth of orchids, so it has long enjoyed the reputation of being a hometown of orchids.
In terms of orchid resources, Heqing is best known for Cymbidium tortisepalum (lianbanlan), which is rich in wild resources. Historically, it has produced traditional famous varieties such as Daxuesu and Xiaoxuesu, which have long been loved by orchid enthusiasts everywhere. The flowers of Daxuesu are plain and clean in color and are regarded as one of the representatives of plain-hearted flowers among Cymbidium tortisepalum, while Xiaoxuesu has a compact plant shape and delicate flowers. In addition to Cymbidium tortisepalum, orchid species such as Cymbidium goeringii and Cymbidium hookerianum are also distributed in the area, and the variety resources are relatively diverse.
From the perspective of care, the Cymbidium tortisepalum produced in Heqing has already adapted to the plateau climate. When cultivating them at home, one should try to simulate the native environment, choose loose, breathable, and well-drained potting medium, keep the environment ventilated, and provide soft, diffused light. Spring and autumn are suitable for repotting and changing the medium. Moderately drying the roots before repotting can let wounds close and reduce root rot, while newly introduced seedlings should first be acclimated and then gradually brought into normal water and fertilizer management.
Orchids have a deep popular foundation in Heqing. Growing orchids, appreciating orchids, and making friends through orchids have long become a local life tradition, and the atmosphere for orchid exhibitions and exchange activities is also relatively active. For beginners, when selecting Cymbidium tortisepalum, pay attention to whether the leaves have disease spots and whether the pseudobulbs are plump. After acquiring them, isolate and observe them for a period first, and once their condition is stable, merge them into daily care, which makes it easier to grow the seedlings strong.
