Growing and caring for flowers refers to the activity of cultivating ornamental plants through sowing, cuttings, division and other methods, and providing them with suitable light, water and nutrients in daily management. It can be done in the ground in a courtyard, and is also suited to balcony and indoor pot culture; today it has become a leisure pastime for many families to beautify their surroundings and cultivate their character.

In terms of varieties, flowers suitable for home growing fall roughly into three major categories: flowering, foliage and succulents. Flowering types such as Chinese rose, gardenia, clivia and pomegranate are grown mainly for their blooms; foliage types such as Dutch iron plant and pothos have leaves that stay green all year and are relatively undemanding to manage; succulents are drought-tolerant and tough, suited to people who do not have much time to tend them.

In daily care, light, watering, soil and fertilizing are the most critical steps. Most flowering plants like ample light, but need appropriate shading in midsummer; watering follows the principle of letting the soil dry before soaking it again, to avoid water accumulating in the pot and causing root rot; the soil should preferably be loose, breathable and well drained; during the growing season apply light fertilizer frequently, and supplementing phosphorus and potassium fertilizer before the flowering period helps promote blooming.

Problems are unavoidable during care, such as clivia failing to push out its flower stalk, yellowing leaves, or dropped flowers and buds; these are mostly related to improper temperature, light or water and fertilizer, and once the cause is identified and adjusted in time, the plant can usually recover. Some flowers can also be tried in hydroponics, which is clean and hygienic and makes the roots easy to observe; you only need to change the water regularly and add nutrients. The key to growing flowers lies in care and patience; as you gradually build up experience, you can have flowers to enjoy in your home all year round.
