Hosta: shade-tolerant and easy to grow, master the key care tips for more fragrant blooms on summer nights
Hosta is a perennial herbaceous plant of the genus Hosta, named for its pure white flower buds that resemble the jade hairpins worn by women in ancient times; it is also known as Yuchunbang and White Crane Immortal. It originated in China, Japan and other places. Its leaves are broad and heart-shaped or ovate, emerald green and glossy. The flower scapes emerge from the center of the leaf clump, bearing several to dozens of flowers, and the flowering period is mostly in summer. Among the commonly cultivated kinds, besides the white-flowered hosta, there are also types such as the light purple-flowered Hosta ventricosa.
Its most prominent feature is shade tolerance. It likes shady, damp environments and dislikes direct strong sunlight; under blazing sun, the leaves tend to turn yellow and develop scorched edges, so it is very suitable for planting under tree shade, beside walls, or on a north-facing balcony. It is also fairly cold-hardy: in winter the aboveground parts wither and go dormant, and they sprout again in spring when temperatures rise, making routine care relatively worry-free.
For care, choose loose, fertile, well-drained soil. During the growing season, keep the potting soil moist but not waterlogged, and pay attention to shading and ventilation in summer. Fertilize according to the principle of small amounts applied frequently, and supplement phosphorus and potassium fertilizer appropriately before flowering, which can produce more flowers and a stronger fragrance. Propagation is mostly by division: in spring or autumn, dig up the old plant and separate it for replanting, with a very high survival rate. In the rainy season, also watch out for snails and slugs chewing the leaves, and remove and control them promptly when found.
Hosta is excellent in both leaf and flower, often used in gardens as understory ground cover or in flower borders, and it is also very elegant when placed in a courtyard as a potted plant. Its flowers open in the evening, and the fragrance is especially noticeable at night. Planted by a window or in the yard, enjoying the flowers and their scent while cooling off on a summer night has a special charm.
