Night-blooming jasmine (Cestrum nocturnum) is a perennial climbing shrub, named for its flowers that open in the evening and release a rich fragrance at night. Its flowering season is mainly concentrated in summer and autumn, with the blooming period usually lasting from early summer into autumn; it flowers most actively around midsummer, when the fragrance is also at its strongest.

Unlike most plants that bloom during the day, night-blooming jasmine tends to open its flowers one after another at dusk, and the scent becomes especially noticeable after nightfall. This is because it relies mainly on night-active insects for pollination, and its intense fragrance is just right for attracting them - a typical trait of night-blooming plants.

If you want night-blooming jasmine to bloom on time and smoothly, there are a few points to keep in mind in terms of care. It likes warmth and plenty of sunlight; insufficient light can easily lead to leggy stems and leaves with fewer flowers. During the growing season, keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, and supplement with phosphorus and potassium fertilizer before flowering to help flower bud differentiation and improve bloom quality. After flowering, promptly cut off spent flowers and overly dense branches to reduce nutrient consumption so that subsequent flowers bloom better.

One thing to note is that night-blooming jasmine has a very intense fragrance at night, and smelling it for a long time may make people feel uncomfortable, so it is not recommended to keep it in a bedroom or a closed indoor space for long periods. Planting it in a courtyard, on a balcony, or another well-ventilated spot lets you enjoy the fragrance on summer and autumn nights while also being safer and more comfortable.
