Erigeron annuus is an annual or biennial herbaceous plant in the genus Erigeron of the family Asteraceae, also known as malaria-herb, thousand-layer pagoda, and white horse orchid. It is native to North America, and today it is very common along roadsides, on field ridges, in wasteland, and in courtyard corners across both northern and southern China. The plant generally grows from several tens of centimeters to around one meter tall, with an erect stem that is much branched in the upper part and short hairs all over.

Its flowers are highly recognizable, with flower heads arranged in corymbs; the outer ray florets are slender and dense, white or slightly tinged with pale blue-purple, while the center consists of yellow tubular florets, looking like little daisies from a distance. The flowering period is mostly in summer and autumn, and once the fruit ripens it bears white pappus that can drift far on the wind and quickly grow into new plants after landing.

As for uses, the whole plant of Erigeron annuus can be used medicinally, and traditional folk belief holds that it helps with digestion and clears heat and detoxifies, hence the common name malaria-herb. In some areas the tender stems and leaves are gathered to feed pigs and rabbits, making it a readily available wild green fodder. In ordinary gardening people rarely cultivate it on purpose, and it is more often appreciated as a roadside little flower full of wild charm.

It should be noted that Erigeron annuus has strong reproductive and adaptive abilities and often grows in dense patches, competing with surrounding crops, vegetables, and native plants for sunlight and nutrients, which is why it is listed as one of the invasive alien species. If you find it in your yard or at the edge of a field, it is best to pull it out by the roots before it flowers and sets seed and dispose of it in a concentrated way, to prevent the seeds from spreading on the wind.

Overall, Erigeron annuus is both a common little white wildflower and an invasive weed to watch out for; only by understanding its morphological characteristics and growth habits can you make use of its value while controlling its spread.
