The rubber plant (Ficus elastica) is a common foliage plant with thick, glossy leaves. Under normal conditions, a small amount of old leaf drop is simply natural metabolism. But if a large number of leaves drop in a short time, it usually means something is wrong with the care environment, and the cause needs to be checked and adjusted promptly.

Improper watering is the most common cause of leaf drop in rubber plants. Overwatering keeps the potting soil wet for a long time, which blocks root respiration and can even cause root rot, after which the leaves turn yellow and fall off; long-term underwatering dehydrates the plant, and the leaves dry up and drop. Generally, you can wait until the surface of the potting soil is dry and then water thoroughly, avoiding water accumulating in the pot.

Light and temperature are equally critical. Rubber plants like plenty of light; kept for a long time in too dark a corner, the leaves cannot get enough nutrients and are prone to falling off. In winter, temperatures that are too low or direct cold drafts can also cause leaf drop. It is best to place the plant in a bright, well-ventilated spot and to protect it from the cold in the cold season.

In addition, a rubber plant that has just been repotted or just moved to a new spot often drops leaves briefly because of the change in environment. This is a normal reaction during the acclimation period, and it will gradually recover as long as the environment is kept stable. Poor ventilation and dry air also make it easy for pests to breed, damaging the leaves and causing them to fall, so pay attention to the undersides of the leaves and the stems and branches in everyday care.

In routine care, make sure the potting soil is loose and breathable, and add a little diluted liquid fertilizer during the growing season to keep the plant growing vigorously. A stronger rubber plant is more resistant, and leaf drop will naturally be noticeably reduced.
