Echeveria 'Shuyan' is a small succulent in the Crassulaceae family, with thick, plump leaves arranged in a tight rosette. The leaf surface usually carries a thin layer of white farina, and under ample light and a large day-night temperature difference, the leaf color shifts from blue-green to pink or orange-red, making it highly ornamental. It tends to form clusters easily, and over time its stems gradually become woody, so it can be grown into a compact, charming old specimen.

When growing Echeveria 'Shuyan', the first thing is to ensure ample light; apart from needing some shade in the height of summer, it can be placed in the sunniest spot the rest of the year. With insufficient light the plant easily becomes leggy, with sparse, spread-out leaves, and the color fades back to green. For the soil, choose a loose mix with a high proportion of grit, with good air and drainage, which is what effectively lowers the risk of root rot.

For watering, follow the principle of soaking thoroughly once the soil is dry: wait until the potting soil is completely dry, then water thoroughly again, avoiding long periods of dampness that smother the roots. In the high heat of summer, Echeveria 'Shuyan' enters dormancy or semi-dormancy, so take care to shade it, limit water and improve ventilation to prevent black rot and mushy leaves. In winter, move it indoors to a sunny spot, keep the potting soil on the dry side, and avoid leaving it in a low-temperature environment for long periods.

Echeveria 'Shuyan' can be propagated by leaf cuttings, and also by dividing the offsets that sprout from the stems; the survival rate for both is quite good. In routine care, if you find leaves turning to mush, blackening or dropping abnormally, it is mostly related to stuffiness and waterlogging, so check the roots promptly and improve the environment. Overall, Echeveria 'Shuyan' is tough and easy to grow; as long as light and ventilation are adequate, even beginners can bring out its beautiful colors.
