Suguan Heding is a famous lotus-petal, pure-centered variety of Chinese cymbidium (Cymbidium goeringii). It gets its name because its petals resemble a lotus flower and its flower color is pure, and it is very well known among orchid enthusiasts. Its plant form is compact, with slender, arching leaves and an elegant posture, making it a terrestrial orchid variety that is excellent both for foliage and for flowers.
Its greatest feature is that it combines lotus petals with a pure center. Lotus petals mean the three outer petals are broad, thick, and rounded, with a narrowed base and flared tips, and a well-formed petal shape, while pure center means the lip is clean with no stray color spots; having both appear on the same flower is relatively rare. When the flower first opens, it is white with a hint of green, and its overall bearing is dignified and imposing, so it is often regarded by orchid growers as one of the representative varieties among lotus-petal pure-center cymbidiums.
In terms of care, Suguan Heding has habits similar to ordinary Chinese cymbidium. It likes loose, breathable potting medium and can be planted with bark, Kanuma soil, and a small amount of humus soil. On ordinary days, place it in a bright spot with scattered light and avoid direct harsh sun; watering should follow the principle of watering when dry and letting it dry between waterings, and never allow water to accumulate in the pot, otherwise the roots are prone to rot. During the peak growing season, apply light fertilizer frequently, while in autumn and winter reduce water and fertilizer.
A suitable period of low-temperature vernalization in winter is very helpful for flowering. If the temperature is on the high side and light is insufficient, it often fails to bloom or the flower quality declines. In daily care, ventilation should also be maintained, and attention paid to common pests such as scale insects and red spider mites. Overall, as long as the potting medium is breathable and the light and temperature are suitable, Suguan Heding is not difficult to grow and is very suitable for balcony and home cultivation.
